Mark Buckley

Founding Partner and CIO

Mark Buckley is Co-Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Three North Capital. Along with Augie, Mark oversees the firm’s investment program and research process.

Mark previously spent a decade as a General Partner at Discovery Equity Partners, a roughly $350 million event-driven activist fund focused on public small-cap companies. Mark was one of four decision makers involved in all aspects of that fund, including investment decisions, trading strategies, Limited Partner engagement, and financial planning/budgeting. During his tenure at Discovery Equity Partners, the fund generated 334% gross and 188% net annualized returns, which significantly outperformed the S&P 500 return of 126%, the Russell 2000 return of 131%, and the Russell Micro-cap return of 110%. Highlights of Mark’s tenure include leading the investment in Horizon Pharma PLC, which resulted in the largest dollar gain in the Fund history and leading the successful activist campaign at Given Imaging, which disgorged excess cash and was acquired by Covidien PLC.

Other relevant work experience includes Senior Analyst at David Capital Partners, a long/short fund focused on U.S. and developed markets; Manager in the Corporate Development & Strategic Planning group of Advanced Medical Optics (NYSE:EYE); Associate in the Mergers & Acquisitions group at Piper Jaffray.

Mark graduated with high honors from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and received a Master of Business Administration degree from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He is also a Certified Public Accountant (inactive).


Augustin Hong, CFA

Founding Partner

Augustin (“Augie”) Hong is Co-Founder and Partner of Three North Capital. Along with Mark, Augie oversees the firm’s investment program and research process.

Augie previously spent nine years as a Principal at Riverwood Capital, a leading growth stage private equity firm focused on technology companies around the world. At Riverwood, Augie was responsible for all aspects of the private equity investment cycle including sourcing, evaluation, due diligence, structuring, documentation, monitoring and monetization. Augie was the third non-partner hire to join the firm and played a key role in defining the investment process and culture of the company. Augie served as a board member and board observer to various portfolio companies and worked closely with other board members and management teams. During his tenure, Augie was involved in some of the firm’s most successful investments, including two exits via IPO and one exit via strategic sale. Subsequent to his departure, two more portfolio companies that Augie was involved with successfully went public.

Following his time at Riverwood, but prior to co-founding Three North Capital, Augie worked in a technology operating role as Senior Director of Business Operations at Nutanix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTNX). Augie partnered with the Chief Revenue Officer and sales leadership to help optimize various aspects of the company’s go-to-market strategy including sales rep productivity, rep retention/attrition, and sales overlay staffing levels. Prior to joining Riverwood, Augie was an analyst at Tidal Creek Capital, a long/short public equity fund focused on technology, business services and clean technology. Augie started his career in the technology M&A group of Citigroup, where he spent eight years.

Augie graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He is a CFA charter holder.
